What we cover
Surveys and Boat Safety Examinations are carried out seven days a week.
GRP Hulls: Detailed osmosis detection using professional moisture readings, percussion testing, and expert visual inspection of the laminate.
Steel Hulls: Accurate thickness assessment using ultra-sound readings and hammer testing to detect corrosive deterioration or damage.
Hull & Deck Structure: Comprehensive internal and external inspection of the primary structure, deck mouldings, and cockpit integrity.
Keel & Bulkheads: Rigorous assessment of keel attachment points, structural stiffening, and the integrity of primary bulkheads.
Steering & Rudder: Full verification of the rudder, steering gear, and all mechanical linkages to ensure safe and responsive handling.
Stern Gear & Propeller: Detailed inspection of the propeller, shaft, bearings, and seals for wear, alignment, or damage.
Skin Fittings & Sea Cocks: Verification of all through-hull apertures and the physical operation and condition of all valves and fittings.
Gas & Fuel Systems: Expert safety check of gas installations and fuel storage/delivery systems for compliance, safety, and leaks.
Electrical & Plumbing: Assessment of battery systems, wiring, fresh water systems, and heads for safe and efficient operation.
Safety Equipment: Verification of fire fighting gear, bilge pumps, and life-saving equipment according to current industry standards.
Rigging & Spars: Visual assessment of standing and running rigging, masts, and spars for signs of fatigue, corrosion, or failure.
Machinery: Thorough static and operational checks of the engines and ancillary machinery to verify condition and performance.
Sea & River Trials
A 40-minute to 2-hour operational check under load to verify engine performance, cooling, and handling in real-world conditions.

Qualified Boat Safety Examiner for Inland Waterways in England, Wales, and Scotland.
I am authorised to carry out BSS examinations and am also Marine Gas Safe, allowing me to certify gas systems on liveaboard vessels—a legal requirement that saves you the expense of hiring two contractors.
Fees: Private boat examinations are £203.40 + report cost of £91.20. Hire/Commercial boats POA.
Pre-Examination Checklist
To help your examination go smoothly and avoid the need for a re-test, please ensure the following are accessible and compliant:
- LPG Lockers & Cylinders: Ensure lockers are unlocked and cylinders are secure. The locker condition must be sound and free of items that could damage the system.
- Fuel System Access: Ensure easy access to fuel storage and that all fuel lines, valves, and connections are visible for inspection.
- Battery Security: Batteries must be secure and terminals must be protected. Ensure they are accessible for checking tightness and signs of corrosion.
- Electrical Isolation: Battery master switches must be clearly labeled and their operation accessible.
- Fire Equipment: Extinguishers must be in-date, the correct rating for your vessel, and fire blankets should be mounted and visible.
- Safety Alarms: Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Smoke alarms must be functional, tested, and within their replacement date.
- Ventilation: Fixed ventilators must be clear of obstructions and meet the minimum requirements for the onboard appliances.
- Records: Have previous BSS certificates and gas/electrical records ready. These are essential if you wish to post-date the new certificate.
